Statement record

Chuck Schumer — Jun 8, 2023

U.S. Senator (D-NY) · Jun 8, 2023

← Findings

June 7–8, 2023 Senate floor: Schumer said the U.S. suffered "some of the worst wildfire air pollution in the entire history of our country" from 400+ Quebec fires. "To walk through New York City yesterday was to walk on another planet — the orange fog of wildfire smoke left our city unrecognizable." He called the fires "truly unprecedented," said climate change makes them "far more common and far more destructive," and called the smog "a warning from nature." On Jun 8 he urged Secretary Vilsack to double Forest Service personnel deployed to fight fires in Canada and touted IRA clean-energy progress while calling for a transmission bill. Analysis notes

Core leadership. In-window event + climate yes. Policy/transmission framing; no named GOP climate obstruction.
