Statement record

Peter Welch — Sep 11, 2024

U.S. Senator (D-VT) · Sep 11, 2024

← Findings

On the evening of September 11, 2024 (office release dated September 12: “last night”), Welch spoke on the Senate floor for supplemental disaster aid. He named this storm: “Louisiana right now is bracing for the worst as Hurricane Francine moves onshore. Our prayers of Vermont are with the people of Louisiana.” That is event yes. Later, in a flexible-aid section, he said “The entire country has been hammered by climate change and by these weather events.” That sentence is about the country and disaster-aid design. It does not attribute Francine’s intensity, Gulf warmth, or landfall to climate change. FEMA funding talk is not obstruction.

Analysis notes

Core senator. In-window (landfall evening). Event yes. Climate no — same call as Beryl: adjacent general climate talk is not this-storm causation. Obstruction no.
