Summary

Dense smoke from wildfires in Canada and northern Minnesota produced hazardous to very unhealthy air quality across much of the Midwest, Great Lakes, mid-Atlantic, and Northeast beginning around mid-July 2026, with national coverage and AirNow alerts affecting on the order of 100 million people. Cities including Detroit, Chicago, Minneapolis, New York, and Washington, D.C. recorded extreme PM2.5 / AQI readings during July 15-17.
